Packaging
The book was packaged in a pop-up box, adding a dramatic opening that reflects the theatrical nature of the pieces in the playlist - classical symphonies typically experienced in concert halls.
The box opens up to a collection of envelope-bound books that imitate the display of records readers can flip through to select a book.
The story excerpt is in written in the form of a letter from one character to another. I used envelopes as a binding method to mirror the feeling of opening a letter with a personal message.
Binding
Each envelope face has a lasercut design that is a simplified rendering of the sheet music of the piece it represents.
Eyes are one of the main motifs of The Sandman, reflecting the characters' development of inner turmoil throughout the story. When opened, the envelopes present an eye-shaped vellum window into the contents, serving as a similar tool as the story where viewers can peer into the "soul" of the excerpt through the eye.
Content
Each envelope contains four layers – a lasercut shape filter, direct text from the passage, a dynamic pupil illustration, and a mood color wash. They can be stacked to form one image, but also individually observed to study the character through a deconstructed lens.
